The State University

Besides all misfortunes that occured, our university managed to consolidate, stay within education system of Serbia and become higher education institution of supreme importance in this region. What  especially has to be said about University of Pristina, now settled in Kosovska Mitrovica, is that it has status of state university, founded by National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia and financed from budget of the Republic of Serbia.

Faculties, the members of our university

Of ten faculties, members of University of Pristina, seven ones conduct its education in Kosovska Mitrovica, those are: Faculty of Economy, Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Science and Mathematics, Faculty of Technical Science, Faculty of Philosophy and Faculty of Arts (partly located in Zvecan near Mitrovica); two of them in Leposavic: Faculty of Teachers Training and Faculty of Physical Education; as Faculty of Agriculture is situated in Zubin Potok. The University also operates and support the work of its external units in Gracanica, Ranilug and Kusce.

Teachers, assistants, staff members and students

In this institution there are 746 full-time teachers and assistants and about 350 staff members. This temple of science and culture counted more than 10,000 students at the moment.

The time when university lacks adequate buildings and equipment for performing education, our teachers and assistants put huge efforts that all could function in accordance with higher education standards and norms, and regardless of real bad conditions, students  achieve education of good quality, compatible to academic level. Naturally, great support is given to us by: Ministry of Education, Ministry of Science, Ministry of Culture, Ministry of Health of the Republic of Serbia and specially by Ministry for Kosovo-Metohia.

Member of KONUS

University of Pristina, now settled in Kosovska Mitrovica, is the member of University Conference of Serbia, which represents meaningful support to our teachers, who could use it as a privilege, in the aspect of education and participation in scientific-research works, as well as at our university, so as at other state universities.

Bologna, process of accreditation

Our university is among the first state universities which work is in accordance with Law on Higher Education of the Republic of Serbia. All universities work on reforming educational programmes, that has to be acted on Bologna declaration. It is insisted specially on curriculum consolidation of study programmes with  similar faculties in Serbia, as well as on principles that study programmes could not differ more than 10%. There is an expectation that till 2010 Bologna process shall start to function at University of Pristina, Kosovska Mitrovica.

International and Inter-University Cooperation

During the last year, many positive results were achieved, when it comes to international and inter-university cooperation. Strong institutional relations are established by signing bilateral agreement with universities in Eastern Sarajevo and Banja Luka. It is also signed the agreement with St. Cyril and Methodius University, Skopje and with University of Patras, Greece. During the recent conference of all state university rectors in Kosovska Mitrovica, inter-university cooperation is established in all aspects of university education and academic practice. University of Pristina, now in Kosovska Mitrovica, confirmed agreements of cooperation with: University of Belgrade,  University of Arts in Belgrade, University of Novi Sad, University of Kragujevac and University of Nis. At the end of last year deans and vice-deans at faculties of our university visited the city of Grenoble, France and throughout this study visit they established cooperation with city’s University Pierre Mendès and both sides expect to sign agreement of inter-university cooperation. It is hinted that in upcoming period University of Pristina set up cooperation with some Russian Universities.

Such kind of international and inter-university cooperation represents one of accreditation duty which implies exchange of students, professors and assistants with the named universities.

On March 11, 2007, UNMIK administration unilaterally abolished a regulation which said that the mentioned administration did not recognize University of Pristina as higher education institution in this area. Since then, we put our efforts to represent ourselves to European University Association (EUA) , and nowadays we’ve become identifiable to European academic community, which confirms our return to EUA list and recommends us to other European universities to set up cooperation with us.

Students

Students and their right on  high-quality education  are primary goals of our university. In accordance with Law on Higher Education of the Republic of Serbia many innovative things, as forming Students Parliament and Student Vice-Rector’s election are introduced, which only provides equal rights of students to make decisions. There is also constant concern for improving student housing conditions. Vigorous measures are taken to improve student standards that concern adequate housing capacities. Students Centre, of its total housing capacity, has at its disposal about 1210 departments located in hostels in Kosovska Mitrovica, Zvecan, Leposavic and Zubin Potok. University’s new-built facility, applied for housing professors, assistants and students, provides about 100 departments only for students. Opening ceremony was held in the presence of Minister of Education in Serbian Government, Prof. Dr. Zoran Loncar. Students Centre  plans adaptation of old as well as building of new student hostels and innovation regarding food,  sports and cultural activities of students.

University Site

There are great concerns about developing unique information system of university. Academic network, accessible to professors, assistants and students has been installed. The site that has been opened offers, many significant information from different spheres and segments of academic life. The site address is: www.pr.ac.rs.

University Library

University Library has been set up within the university domain. In July, 2007, National Library of Serbia, Belgrade donated 30,971 books to our university, of which 12,515 are laid aside for university and library needs. Newspaper company „Novosti“ also donated over 400 books, so that University Library now has 13,200 editions altogether.

University of Pristina is very creative and vital higher education entity, capable to constantly widen its aspects of universal, scientific, cultural, as well as ethical and social values. In this direction we`ll do our best to provide respectable position to our university, which deservedly belongs to it and take pains to make it more influential and constructive, not only among family of Serbian universities, but other universities abroad. We`ll strive to represent ourselves as significant intellectual institution, enable to create new perspective and potential, that could be our strong recommendation and ticket for future.

In these hard times University of Pristina, now in Kosovska Mitrovica sympathizes with destiny of its people in Kosovo-Metohia and endeavours to participate in solving annoying and fateful issues that refer to subsistence and future of Serbs in this region.
